School of Management Studies (SMS), Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is organizing a seminar on DISASTER MANAGEMENT – STRATEGIES AND TACTICS on 17th September 2011 at the SMS Auditorium, CUSAT main campus from 11am to 3.30pm. Screening of “DAM the lethal water bombs” ,a documentary directed by Sohan Roy and winner of 4 international awards and official entrant to 13 international film festivals is another attraction of the event.
Kochi has embraced unscientific development at the cost of its very existence making it vulnerable to natural disasters. Kochi, being home to major industrial belts like Eloor, Kalamassery, Ambalamugal etc in addition to projects like LNG terminal, face serious threat in case of a calamity. In the absence of a strategic disaster management mechanism the city will be washed out in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.
Talentime 2011, the annual management fest of School of Management Studies has adopted “Disaster Management” as this year’s social responsibility cause. The seminar on DISASTER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND TACTICS is the curtain raiser event of Talentime 2011. The event pledges to enlighten the citizens of Kochi on the need to take measures to avert nature’s wrath or atleast sustain the inevitable.
Sri Thrivanchoor Radhakrishnan,( Honorable Minister for Revenue and Vigilance, Govt of Kerala and Vice Chairman of State Disaster Management Authority), will inaugurate the seminar which will be presided over by Dr. Ramachandran Thekkedath, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology. Sri. Sohan Roy, Director of Hollywood movie ‘DAM 999’ and CEO of Aries Group will deliver the keynote address.
The session will be followed by a panel discussion on Disaster Management to be chaired by Dr. V. N. Sivasankaran Pillai, Director, Center for Appropriate Technology and Environment. The Panelists are Dr.A. V. George, Head of the Department, Geology and Environmental Sciences, Christ College Irinjalakkuda and Dr. Deepak Kumar Sahoo, Faculty Member –Division of Safety and Fire Engineering, SOE, CUSAT.
