chinese_handsetMobile phone users operating Chinese handsets might get into trouble if they don’t have valid IMEI number. The authorities have already issued orders to mobile service providers not to accept any calls from handsets without a legitimate international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) number. This is actually done to prevent the sale of smuggled handsets from China and Taiwan. These smuggled handsets are considered to be growing threat to internal security. Earlier, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade had already banned the import of mobile phones with no IMEI numbers.  From December onwards, none of the calls coming from these handsets will be accepted. Mobile service providers are already on their way to trace and identify phones without IMEI numbers. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has provisions for identifying mobile phones without IMEI numbers. They can be traced by inserting the SIM card.

Smuggled handsets without IMEI numbers are more and more put to use by anti-national elements. And so the Centre has decided to crackdown on smuggled handsets without IMEI numbers in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks. Moreover it is difficult to trace the SIM card details if the IMEI number is absent. Earlier frequent raids were held at the mobile shops across the country to find out smuggled handsets. Whether it’s possible to stops signals to handsets without IMEI number, is still an issue to be resolved.
