Life in Kochi @ risk?

image.jpgHow safe is your life in Kochi? Life is at stake in a city like Kochi with its speeding bus drivers. Most of the roads do not have proper markings. Zebra crossings are a must for all major roads, but in Kochi you don’t get to see them even at busy junctions. Pedestrians find it difficult to cross the busy roads and most of the vehicles pass by without even considering the pedestrians crossing. Crossing the road is one of my nightmares as well. The district administration and the City Police pointed out the need for proper markings on the road during the meeting of the District Road Safety Council. Till now, there is no improvement to be seen due to lack of funds. Obviously the funds will be in the pockets of the authorities! But are we paying the price for the inefficiency of these authorities?

The State Road Safety Council meeting will be held next week where the need for proper markings would be stressed by the Collector. At least the city police is doing their part by charging the reckless drivers, so lets have a small sigh of relief. Around 100 buses were charged in last two days. An awareness programme for drivers will be organized in co-ordination with various departments. Also the Private Bus Operators Association has been sought for cooperation to avoid such accidents in future. Now how far will this come into effect? Only time will tell. Anyway the district administration and the traffic police are stressing the need for zebra crossings on city roads. But what about the authorities concerned…are they listening?

  1. “Pedestrians find it difficult to cross the busy roads ” i would say it is also difficult to walk on Cochin footpaths during peak hours as the traffic(two wheelers) overflows into the foot paths to evade the long waiting in traffic blocks.

i guess we as kochiites get used to the risky life…i realised it when my bro came visiting and he had a tough time even crossing roads..the kid got fedup looking 4 zebracrossings and finally decided to cross the road after the traffic reduced…the time he took to cross the road is left to ur imagination…
