Kochi to be safe from blackouts
KSEB’s City Automation System will be operational in the city soon. It aims to minimize power supply outages in Kochi. PWD has sanctioned go-ahead notice to IRCON, which is responsible for implementing the project, to recommence road-cutting work to lay cables for the project. This project worth over Rs 130 crore was supposed to be completed this month. Due to several setbacks in the beginning delayed its execution. About 30 months ago, the MoU was signed. Due to the legal dispute between the Indian Railway Construction Corporation and its supplier, the project slowed down. It took lot of time for IRCON to resolve the issues. And so this led to a breach of the contract it had signed with the PWD to dig roads. The issue of restoration work also proved to be a hurdle in implementing the project. Apart from all these issues, monsoon also played its role. IRCON has now settled most of the issues.
As soon as the PWD grants clearance IRCON would restart the work. All the work other than laying of cables, has been completed. KSEB technical staff will execute the IT component of the project. The system involves isolating a faulty transformer and restoring power through a software system bypassing the faulty one. The faulty one would be attended simultaneously by the ground staff. If everything goes as planned, the system will be operational within six months and Kochi will be safe from blackouts.
