12sep_copsKochi authorities have finally opened their eyes! The tragic death of two pedestrians in the last two days had to bring the authorities into action. Red killers have to control their speed now, else they would be fined. On Friday morning, around 12 private buses were fined for exceeding the city speed limit of 35 kmph. Now frequent speed checks of private vehicles will be conducted in the city by the traffic department. Separate squads were informed to check the speed of private buses at various locations in the city. Speed guns were used to do so. A police team in mufti called ‘Ghost’ will be in action to conduct surprise checks on private buses. The private buses exceeding the city speed limit will be fined Rs. 400 and also immediate steps will be taken to suspend their license. The traffic department has decided to bring in additional police team and equip them with speed guns to track the erring buses. Apart from this, certain traffic regulations will also be formulated in the city. The picture here shows Traffic AC K S Baby Vinod and CI K R Venugopalan checking the speed of private buses using a speed gun in front of Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium.

I got to witness the speeding buses yesterday. All the way from Thevara, they had no control on their speed but the moment they reached Kaloor they were going so slow as if they don’t know to raise their speed beyond 35 kmph…..just to impress the traffic police and after passing the Stadium, they were back in form. On the other hand, it was good to see traffic police in action. Will the tough measures taken by the traffic police against speeding private buses stay that long? We’ll get to know that very soon. Lets hope the measures being taken are not just an eyewash to calm the public!

  1. “Red killers” ya that is what the private buses had become nowadays. What ever be the steps taken(punching, speed governer) they will find a way around it .If the action by the city police continues or will it be an act which will  die out with pressure of influence??It is to be waited and seen.

  2. I would recommend changing the color of red to something more mild…..might help keep the racing passion down for the drivers :)

I would suggest to stop the RED KILLERS totally and introduce govt buses like other metros.

  4. After the accident in Kaloor , it is really nice police taking actions against the bus drive, This always happen after an incident . What really requires is a consistent check on the buses and also the commuters reporting incidents to the police if he/she feels the speed is more than the limit .

  7. pinne thenga kola…ethonnum kondu cochin bus operators nannavilla… As far as I know..most of the bus owners are goondas..they got lot of political power..this is not at all a way to curb the killings..cancel all the private buses…run government buses.. this can be said…but this can never be done…not in kerala..

  8. @Tito, that is successfully implemented in the tvm to trissur in the long distance…They screwed up beyond that.

Perhaps the Traffic police should introduce a point based tracking system for Private/KSRTC bus drivers. Each offence (or crime to be more precise) induces points on their license. The points increases according to the seriousness of the offence eg. Speeding induces 2 pts., Minor Accident 5 pts. etc…The next time they commit another offence the severity of the fine increases on the basis of points accumulated so far ,along with more additional points on the license. This will keep going until the said driver reaches a barrier of say 15-20 points after which his license can be cancelled.
This system will put onus on the drivers to take care of their own careers and therefore use commonsense while driving.

it is really pathetic to see that no so called “for the good of the public” political groups have come forward with regard to the issue…feel like laughing when i see the common man suffering when they r busy trying to get rid af a bar licence in the IMAclub..talk about priorities!!!

  11. Ernakulam police named as ghost… this is the best usage.

Ernakulam police were previously searching for harry potter in Ernakulam and now buses that ride fast… :D

To be frank, most people in cochin do not know to drive vehicles. You could notice them running on different sections of the road violating all traffic rules.

Traffic department are the victims who issue lisence to these immature drivers.

Hey its nice to see some action from the side of the police now. Drunk driving and stuff like that have been made very strict nowadays and unlike earlier when you could just have a 100 rupee note do the talking, the scene has changed completely. Well how long this will hold up is a different question but lets see what what happens. I have been in Bangalore for sometime and currently am working in Chennai. If you know the cops here you will definitely say that god own country certainly has the best and decent cops ever. I certainly hope Jisha gets a chance to write about the cops here. If i start commenting about the cops my language will cross all limits I aint supposed to cross.

  14. For the speeding problem, I think i have a simple solution: Give the power into the hands of the public; start an sms hotline. For detailed explanations, please read it in my blog at http://ageekwannabe.blogspot.com/2009/11/solution-to-speeding-buses.html

In Kochi city, Traffic or Imspector Police must check those private buses which is overtake any vehicle without looking any vehicle comes through toward backward of the road from front side of the road, non stop the signal light and not obey the rule of signal light or Traffic Police. I think thad Driver, Conductor and Cleaner of Privte Buses was drunkard. Now, this is drunkard driver is in Private bus. Government must remove all City, Ordinary and Limited stop Private buses from the road in kochi city. We, the peope and I order the KSRTC low floor bus must run their route in kochi city and safe. KSRTC low floor bus can stop the signal light and obey the rule of signal light, run slower and safe their life. People can do with KSRTC low floor bus.
