Is Kochi Safe for You?

burgler1I usually get rebuked a lot by my cousins who come here on vacations from metros like Chennai and Bangalore. They tell me that in Kerala, the only entertainment you have is television. Shops close by 8-9pm and there are hardly any shops or people on the roads on a Sunday.

Recently in a news clipping about the death of Mithun, an 18- year-old engineering student who was murdered at Edavanakkad on April 23 by a local gang got me thinking, is kochi really safe? I wonder if our early sleeping city and its shops are scared of being robbed and murdered?

I talked to a few security agencies when I had the chance last week and they tell me that Kochi is comparitively safer compared to the rest of the country according to their stats.

“Also the police measures are pretty effectively implemented across the city” says my friend Vishnu working in a security agency. “Flying squads, night patrol and police in mufti usually keep an eye across the district especially in this time of terrorist threats. ”

I wanted to ask the readers of CochinSquare about the security you feel when you go out in the night. Do you, the citizens of Cochin feel safe about venturing out in the night?

I was born and brought up in Cochin and as far as I see Cochin is safer. I have felt some insecurity while I had been to other cities, but maybe it is the safe feeling you get back at your home. But still, Cochin is the safest place for me.

    Whats with the scary articles!

I’m sure ore readers would prefer to read reviews about fine dining and hotel accommodation. There are many budgets and cochin square doesn’t seem to be reviewing all the outlets

    Coffee Beanz?
    Cafe Coffee Days?
    Chic Kings
    Golden Fork
    Pizza hut
    Subway

    Seagate hotel’s restaurant (fine dining)
Renaissance hotel’s restaurant (pricey but great buffet)

What about all the hotels and restaurants on Fort Kochi beach and Cherai beach?

Seeing cochin is great but the last thing visitors need to remember is an upset tummy while they were viewing the sights.

I’ve traveled on buses towards west kochi at around 9 PM quite a number of times. There can be times when you keep getting the smell of alcohol, never noticed any violence or anything.

“Ikkara ninnal, akkara pacha” – to understand the beauty and advantages of Kochin, you have to
visit and live outside Kochin – after that, one will realize how wonderful Kochin is. Sure, traffic is a
mess and private buses are crowded and overspeeding – but we, as Kochin-ites can change
that – to an extent. We can drive with more road sense and voice our concerns and complaints
loud enough so that the bus owners and drivers hear, understand and if needed – fear them.
