International bunkering terminal coming in Cochin
The Cochin Port has started the project initiatives to set up the first port based Special Economic Zone(SEZ) in India. Projects like Bunkering Terminal, Distribution Park and process industries have been proposed in these SEZs.
Gurgaon-based Feedback Ventures has been appointed as consultants for the project, which is estimated to cost Rs 184 crore. After the bunkering terminal is constructed, global tenders will be invited for operation of the terminal. The terminal will also be used for import of LPG to the upcoming terminal of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd in the Puthuvypeen area. Fueling of ships has been very expensive in India because of high taxes that make fuel prices equally high compared to international standards which results in, ships visiting Indian ports do not generally buy fuel from here.
The terminal will soon exist, as the State Government has promised to non-Value Added Tax (VAT) on the terminal. Apart from those ships that dock at Cochin Port, ships moving on international channels can also be supplied bunkers by special fueling barges that go and attach themselves to the moving ships. Other opportunities include supply of fresh water, vegetables, fish and other food materials etc., as well as spare parts for minor repairs. These will definitely boost up business prospects for Cochin.
