INS Viraat to be fully operational in 2 months
INS Viraat, India’s solitary aircraft will be fully operational in another two months. It has been out of action since early 2008, first at Mumbai Harbor ad then at the Cochin Shipyard. INS Viraat has Sea Harrier jump-jets, helicopters and a total of 1,500-crew members. On May 12 this year, INS Viraat completed 23 years of its service with the Indian Navy. The warship will complete 50 years on November 18 taking into account its British Royal Navy service in its earlier avatar as HMS Hermes.

The warship is currently docked at the Cochin Shipyard for repairs and maintenance. Most of the refit work of INS Viraat has been completed here in Kochi and the rest is expected to be done by August-end. The warship will then undergo a work-up phase and trials off Mumbai before it is fully ready to take off for operations. It is 50 years old now, there is no doubt in smooth running of the warship for another five years.
