Kochi Cops in action! It seems that Cops in Kochi will soon be getting more time to focus on crime investigation. The workload of the police will be reduced to a greatera extent so that they could get more time for crime investigation. To make this happen, a survey will be conducted by the City Police with the help of students from five educational institutions in police stations across the city. This was found highly successful in abroad. Here the initiative is being implemented on an experimental basis. The students of five institutions in Kochi – SCMS, Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT) and ICFAI – are part of the initiative.
City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said, “Currently, policemen in the city have several duties like security, VIP escort and accompanying prisoners. They are not able to focus fully on crime investigation and traffic duties. This affects crime investigation,” In abroad, the solution to this issue is by training a number of private security guards. These guards take care of most duties other than crime investigation. Security issues related to banking and other financial institutions are being handled by these guards. How the initiative could be implemented! Well, the Commissioner said that a meeting of all officials concerned and students would be convened shortly to discuss this issue.
The officials said that the students will be going to police stations and collect information. Students would identify the number of cases handled by each station and the cases registered under each category. The survey would give a clear picture of time being spent by the police for crime investigation, traffic duties and other responsibilities. How far its going to be successful depends on time….
