Cochin Port Trust to set up desalination plant soon
The Cochin Port Trust (CPT) is planning to set up a desalination plant at Willingdon Island in order to achieve self reliance in meeting its water needs for commercial and domestic purposes for the present and future. The CPT has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for
setting up this desalination plant for supplying water for a period of 15 years. At present, the CPT is getting 2000 Kilo Litre (KL) of water from Kerala Water Authority (KWA) which is insufficient to meet the demand of CPT. This prompted the CPT to come up with this idea of setting up a desalination plant.
The CPT is severely constrained by the current shortage that is hampering services to both domestic and commercial sectors and supplies to ship calling at the port. The CPT chosen to develop this facility will be provided land for setting up the desalination plant, overhead tanks at notified lease rates and permission to lay pipelines. The CPT has also drawn up plans to turn Kochi into a major bunkering destination and has plans to offer concessions to vessels that come to port on bunkers-only calls.
