Preview of CLYDE CHABOT’s A Museum (theatre) / Hamlet-Machine on Wednesday, January 6, at 6.30 pm.
“A Museum (theatre)” at Kashi Art Gallery, Mattancherry is an interactive social installation conceived by French stage director Clyde Chabot. Inspired by Heiner Müller’s play Hamlet-Machine, the project is an attempt to incorporate, in the lapse of a snapshot, each person’s individual story into a larger history.
Visitors decide whether ‘to be or not to be’ as they can become Hamlet or Ophelia and create their own self-portrait. They choose a picture in a collection of 60 historical, social and artistic photos from the beginning of the 20th century up to today (including photography from the Indian contemporary artist Tejal Shah and Malayali photographer Feroze Babu). This picture is projected onto a large screen. They also choose one (or several) word(s) taken from Heiner Müller’s play – the words are in English and Malayalam.
Ema Cima, photographer, shoots the portraits of visitors as they stand in front of their selected projected image, holding their chosen word(s).
The audience can see the pictures which were taken on the spot, as well as those of previous sessions of the installation in France and Germany. The visitors can also find them on the internet .
The program continues through the 10 of January 2010.
