The Ernakulam District Yoga Sports Association is organizing the Ernakulam District Yoga Competition 2011 here in Kochi.

The Competition is for the school students, both boys and girls. The participants would be divided into various teams and events planned accordingly. The students will get an oppurtunity to show their skills in Yoga as well as team work. There are numerous prizes to be won.

Protect your Mom campaign in association with KUDS India is organizing a pink walkathon to create awareness about breast cancer. The Protect Your Mom campaign was started by Ms. Premi Mathew from Kochi, currently residing in Dubai. Started in 2010 , now the campaign has close to 8500 followers. The basic idea behind this campaign is to raise the awareness among children about breast cancer and how they can help their mothers in early detection.

The campaign has gained popularity by word of mouth and has close to 1850 followers on its Facebook page. Along with the walkathon, the campaign is also inviting students to design posters, dances, skits, slogans, anything to create awareness about self exams in a language which students can relate to. The date for the walkathon has not been finalized. Students can send in their entries to pym20101@hotmail.com. There are exciting prizes on offer for selcted entries.

The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) of Kerala would be rolling out lifestyle clinics across the state to provide easy access to medical treatment, recognising the threat of non communicable diseases. These clinics will be based at sub-centre level of Primary Health Centre. This will help in covering up the entire state at a much faster rate. A checklist will be maintained of people above 30 years of age with their family history of hypertension, diabetes, cardiac ailment as well as other diseases at the sub-centre. A daily register would also be maintained to check the number of people approaching the clinic and the types of diseases.

For this project Rs 2 crore has been already allotted and the sum will be distributed to each district depending upon the preferences. Those identified with lifestyle disease would be counselled about disease management and would be provided with preventive medicine if needed. These clinics are expected to begin this month. At present there are three polyclinics in Kerala (Kalamassery, Kadayiruppu, and Ezhikkara) which are functional.
