ATM(Any Time Milk) in Cochin
ATM, you might be thinking about the good old ATM machines, but guess what? You got it wrong. This ATM is any time milk vending machine. Milma, the milk man of Kerala is installing any time milk vending machines in residential areas of Cochin. The official inauguration of the ATM project is today at the Kaloor renewal centre, at 11 am by Mayor Mercy Williams. This vending machine will provide packaged milk and curd. As a trial attempt 5 machines will be installed and after evaluating the success of the project more ATMs will be installed to cover all the residential areas in Cochin.
Milma is implementing the project in co-operation of resident association. Electronic smart cards will be given to members of resident association. Recharge coupons will be available with officials of resident association to recharge the smart cards. ATMs are equipped with systems to alert Milma unit about the availability of stock through SMS. It’s the first of its kind in the country. Milma gets all the credit and hope that low milk production of the state will not affect the project.
If you come across these machines in the city, do share the pictures and video with us!

on September 19th, 2010Rather than a packet dispensing machine, Milma could have followed a milk distribution system that is followed in many metropolises, that is a proper milk vending machine.
When I used to live in New Delhi in ’90s Dairy Corporation used to have milk dispensing centers in most neighborhoods. We can buy tokens per liter of milk. Chilled milk is brought in tankers a few times a day and refilled in the booths after which milk could be collected from the vending machines. People used to collect the chilled fresh milk from these stations in their own containers. Cleaned regularly this system was very successful. If implemented in Cochin such a measure would be better than unnecessarily increasing the usage of packing plastic.
