Festivals are the greatest symbol of joy. Earlier our economy was agriculture based. After months of hard work celebration can be justified. Now we are heading towards capitalism! (but we are saying that we are a mixed economy). In capitalism or in a free economy, market forces determines everything. We, as the common man, only need to watch and act accordingly.

Akshaya Tritiya is going to be celebrated on 16th May. This in all sense is a marketing festival. I should say it is a ‘pseudo festival’. Intention of which is only to steal our money. Some 3-4 years before there wasn’t a celebration called Akshaya Tritiya. This festival has been imported by market forces to make more money. Nowadays every day is a festival day. One should be ashamed of celebrating all these. Because these numerous festivals wipe out the very nature of true festivals.

Due to large sell off in stock market across the globe gold price is heading towards new record. It is believed that in the near future it will touch an all time high of $1500 per ounce (31.1gram).  Now it is at $1228 level. India is the largest importer of gold. We import an approximate 800 tonnes per year. And we are celebrating Akshaya Tritiya only to hike the price. Take the case of the fathers who have daughters. For the common man gold is needed at the time of wedding. When the price is going to touch the skies how can they buy gold and marry off their daughters. Akshaya Tritiya will not bring more gold to our houses, instead it will loot our money. When we celebrate these festivals we become dolls at the hands of market forces, so beware!

  1. the concept of akshaya thrithiya was there from ancient times itself. But the credit of making it a festival of this kind goes to the  unknown creative genius in some advertising agency…
Akshaya thrithiya is nothing but a marketing exercise like the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival or the cyber monday type stuff in the US.

And i couldnt agree you saying “For the common man gold is needed at the time of wedding. When the price is going to touch the skies how can they buy gold and marry off their daughters”
The practice of giving dowry should be stopped first

  2. Thanks sujith for the comment. Not one or two can stop the system of dowry. It is a social stigma.I only wonder why kerala women are more fascinated about gold!!!

  3. Dowry is illegal in India. If no one can stop it, it means that Indian legal system is useless.

One more thing to mention here is that 50 years ago, dowry was not that prevalent here in Kerala. Only Brahmins and Christians had this dowry system. And Muslims had the ‘mehr’ system which is just the opposite of dowry.

Dowry, horoscope matching, pongala etc. were imported to common man’s culture in the second half of 20th century. Akshaya Thrithiya is the latest.
